September 25, 2011
Final Touches in most every trade were accomplished this week.
Topsoil was placed and graded. Painting, both outside and in the
narthex was completed. Reflectors were installed in the narthex lights along
with wall sconces. The new exterior lighting was completed. Carpeting was laid
in the narthex and baseboard was installed.
At the time this announcement was written striping of the
parking lot, installation of handicapped parking signs and of sills and frames
around the new windows was pending but scheduled by the end of the week.
Loose ends will remain to be tied up next week, but major
activity should be complete as you read this announcement.
Reserve Sunday, 23 October from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. for an Open
House for our sister congregations, neighbors, and friends.
September 18, 2011
The walks for the new entrance and bell tower have been poured.
Placing, grading, and seeding of topsoil are next on the agenda. This week the
west side of our parking lot will be re-striped.
The entry dormer has been shingled, and the plaster facade is
ready for final painting and caulking.
Preparation for the final trimming out of the new windows has
begun.
The replacement insulation over the Narthex is in place, and the
drywall ceiling has been installed and is ready for paint. Next week, it's time
for carpeting and baseboard, altar guild cabinets, remaining light fixtures,
coat racks, and a new drinking fountain. Once all this is complete the new
construction will be cleaned, the restroom floor cleaned and waxed, and the
heating and air conditioning system fine-tuned.
We are very fortunate that only half of the contingency has been
committed, so our loan will be about $9,000 less than projected.
The dedication of our new facilities will take place on Sunday,
September 25. We will gather in the narthex at 10:15 for a brief rite of
dedication and then proceed into the nave.
The Church Council approved Sunday, 23 October from 2:00 - 4:00
p.m. for the Open House for our sister congregations, neighbors, and friends.
September 11, 2011
We are within two weeks of being complete. The Dedication is
scheduled for Sunday, September 25 at the beginning of worship service.
We have installed a cabinet in the storage room. The tables and
chairs have been moved there.
The file cabinets have also been relocated to the storage room.
The new nursery has been completed and is being used.
Replacement windows have been installed. Trim and finishing
should be completed next week.
Cabinets have been installed in the secretary's workroom.
Alter Guild Cabinets have been delivered and should be installed
in the next week.
The narthex ceiling and walls are taking shape. Work on finishes
is on the agenda for next week.
The new furnace and air conditioner for the classrooms and
nursery are functional. Other changes to the heating and ventilation systems are
almost complete.
Electrical installations are almost complete.
As we move toward completion, we will be scheduling work days to
get the whole building ready for our upcoming Open House.
September 4, 2011
We have made a lot of progress this week.
The secretary's office and work room, and Pastor's office are
scheduled to be completed this week. We still have to hang some wall paper and
do some minor clean-up. Sue should be moved back in within a day or so. New
Cabinets have been installed.
With the completion of the new Nursery room, we have begun to
make preparations for Rally Day, next Sunday September 11.
The storage room is complete. Most of the material stored in the
classrooms has been moved there already.
The work on the gable at the new entry has begun. The glass and
aluminum entry doors have been installed.
The new furnace serving the classrooms has been installed,
complete with new ductwork. Repairs to the ductwork in the Fellowship Hall are
scheduled for next week. We should enjoy greatly improved heating and cooling in
those areas.
The exterior finis plaster work will begin this coming week.
Narthex ceiling and drywall work will also begin this coming
week.
Window replacement will start this coming week.
The revised date for fi9nal completion is September 23.
An open house for our sister congregations, neighbors and
friends is scheduled for October 9. We hope all members of the congregation will
plan to be there, and invite their friends and relatives.
When construction is completed, help will be needed to get
things back where they belong and make sure that the building is clean, neat,
and welcoming to members and visitors, especially as we plan for the October 9
open house. Watch for news of work days and opportunities to help.
August 21, 2011
Work on the heating and air conditioning system continued this
week. You may notice new grills in the ceiling in the fellowship hall. With a
new furnace and air conditioning unit being installed for the classrooms and new
nursery, adjustments are also being make in the circulation system for the
fellowship hall.
Ceiling tile outside the new nursery has been finished. glass
panes have been installed in the windows between the nursery ceiling and door to
the nursery.
The lintel for the new entrance was set this week, and masonry
work on the pillars that will help define th entrance was completed. While the
new glass and aluminum doors won't be installed for a while, when the new
entrance isn't boarded up for security it's beginning to be clear to be how
everything is going to come together.
Work on finishing the drywall in the area of the new narthex
closest to the entrance to the church has begun. The remainder of the existing
men's restroom was demolished. If all went according to plan, be the tim4e you
read this demolition of the existing women's restroom will have at least begun.
If this is the case, both new restrooms are available for use. (There are plans
to install a cabinet in the women's restroom. This is something the congregation
will do after the construction is complete.)
August 14, 2011
Once again significant visible progress was made in the last
week.
The old entrance is now completely closed in, with a floor in
the area between the cement block wall and the entrance doors.
The secretary's workroom has been painted and is awaiting
cabinets.
The new men's restroom is functional, though still awaiting
permanent lights. As a result it was possible to demolish the old men's restroom
and begin work on the new entrance.
Work continues on the new women's restroom. It's not ready for
use yet, but it won't be long before it's available and the existing women's
restroom can be demolished as well.
A concrete pad was poured outside the new women's restroom for
two air conditioner compressors, one new and one to be relocated.
The foundation for the new entrance was poured, making it easier
to see precisely where the entrance will be.
Painting inside and outside of the new nursery is pretty well
complete.
Though not visible, a lot of work has been taking place in the
attic on the heating, cooling, and ventilation system. Changes are being made to
account for the new room configurations, where necessary repairs to the existing
ductwork are being made, and preparations for the new furnace and air
conditioner for the classroom and nursery are well underway.
In short, it's been a noisy and messy week, but lots of progress
has been made. Within the next week or two you won't need much imagination to
understand what the completed project will look like. Demolition will be
complete and new walls and spaces will be waiting for final finishes, fixtures,
and hardware.
August 7, 2011
Good News! Next week we expect that the new restrooms will be
ready for occupancy. The demolition of the old ones will then begin. This will
allow for work to proceed on the new entry and narthex.
Work continues on the conversion of the old hallway into storage
space and a secretarial workroom.
The sign committee continues to make good progress.
July 31, 2011
Significant visible progress has been made this week. The
drywall in the new restrooms was completed and painting there has begun. Work on
the ducts for heating and cooling is nearly complete. Restroom ceilings are
scheduled for installation next week.
We hope to have occupancy of the new restrooms soon. Once
they're available, work on the new Entry and Narthex can begin with demolition
of the old restrooms.
Work in the old hallway is underway. New doorways have been cut
in the block walls. The new partition separation the secretary's work-room from
the storage room is in place. Preparations for construction a block wall outside
of where we used to enter the hallway are almost complete.
July 24, 2011
The new spaces are taking shape. The drywall is installed in the
Restrooms and Nursery and will have final finishing complete next week (the
window in the Nursery is installed). the windows in the restrooms, the old
nursery, have been removed and filled in.
Building inspectors have approved electrical and plumbing
rough-ins.; new concrete floor and walls have been approved.
Demolition work has begun in the hallway conversion; new
doorways will be cut in, and ceiling rafters will be reinforced for new furnace.
We have agreed that the "temporary" ramp to the
classrooms will remain permanently. Slight revisions to the parking arrangement
and exterior work will be make to accommodate this.
July 10, 2011
Rough framing for the walls of the restrooms and nursery is
complete. Plumbing lines are being run, and required modifications to the
heating and ventilating system have begun.
Material and color selections are being made.
The first bill from Spieker Company has been received and paid.
The major payments will be coming soon.
July 3, 2011
What might appear to be a bit of mess is really progress! In the
past week there's been a lot of activity, much of it hidden from view underground.
The sewer tap was installed, inspected, and approved.
A sanitary sewer line has been run to the building, inspected,
approved and in use.
The old septic tank has been taken out of service and filled in
as required.
The underground plumbing for the new rest rooms has been roughed
in, tested, inspected, and approved. The new floor slab has been poured. Wall
framing for the new rest rooms will begin this week.
Electrical, heating, and ventilating work will begin this week.
The new walk to the back door is ready to use, and hallway
construction has begun.
Framing for the new nursery has begun.
June 26, 2011
The floor slab in the nursery area (new restrooms) has been
removed and the plumber will start to install the underground plumbing.
The exterior utilities have been located, and the excavating
subcontractor has begun work on the exterior sewer.
This is the last week that the hallway will be accessible. The
contractor will install the temporary ramp to the Fellowship Hall Classroom door.
Next week, the hallway doors will be permanently blocked off, and work will
begin in the hallway.
Carpentry work will begin next week on the the new Nursery Room
in the Fellowship Hall.
June 19, 2011
The building permit was obtained on Monday of this week and on
Tuesday demolition began in earnest. Please be sure to use the alternate
entrances and exits to the building during this time of construction. since the
hallway will be sealed off.
Do not forget to check your mailbox, even though it is now
located in the fellowship hall! Note also that mailboxes have been re-labeled.
Thanks to all volunteers who helped relocate the banner closet and mailboxes.
June 12, 2011
This past week work began on relocation of the banner storage
fixtures. Banner storage will be moved in the cabinet that had been used for
paper products at the end of the main entrance hallway.
The entrance hallway has been cleared and is ready for
construction operations. In the first phase of construction it will be sealed
off. As a result, beginning Monday, June 13th, access to the building will be
through the door at the end of the classroom hallway Or through the double doors
into the nave of the church. As the project progresses, watch this space for any
changes regarding building access.
The loan documents have been signed and returned to the Ohio
District Lutheran Church Extension Fund office in Cleveland
We have paid the fee for the tap into the sewer on Five Point
Road, and are awaiting a Building Permit from Wood County.
Our contractor, the Spieker Company will mobilize this Monday,
June 13, and begin demolition work. Mr. Jeff Flory will be Spieker's superintendent.
Ryan Keller, the project manager, has confirmed that the
Spieker Company was the contractor for our original Church building. He father
noted that Mr. Flory's father worked on that project.
June 5, 2011
On May 31 representatives of the building committee met with a
representative of the Spieker Company to plan the construction schedule. The
architect, Lee Short, was also present.
Mr. Ryan Keller is the project manager for the Spieker co. The
contractor expects to start the demolition in the nursery and hallway
immediately. The next step would be to construct the new restrooms.
Since the hallway will be involved in this part of the project,
the doors from the parking lot will be closed off and not available as an
entrance or exit. Entrance to the building will be through the south door in the
classroom area. The contractor will pour a temporary walk and ramp from the
parking lot to this door. It will be handicap-accessible and will include
temporary railings. On the inside, the hallway will be sealed off by a temporary
partition. Access to the building can also be gained through the rear doors of
the sanctuary. Spieker Co. will take every measure possible to insure safety and
accessibility for our members and guests.
We are still waiting for approval from the City of Perrysurg for
our sewer tap permit. Jim is working closely with city officials.
Existing restrooms will stay in operation until the new ones are
completed and approved. Our plans do not require bringing in portable toilet
facilities.
Don't forget the work day on June 11, to move mailboxes,
finish clearing the hall, etc. Let Martin know if you can help.
Pictures of ground breaking follow.
May 29, 2011
On Saturday, May 21, men met at church and dismantled and moved
cabinets from the nursery, clearing the way for construction to begin on the new
bathrooms.
Next on the agenda is moving nursery materials into the
"summer nursery", (the tiled classroom). This is planned for the
next Sunday, June 5th, following the fellowship hour. Many hands make light
work, so if you're able to stick around for a few minutes to lend a hand that
would be much appreciated.
On Saturday, June 11th, items from the hallway - virtually
everything but the coat racks - need to be relocated or stored. Anyone who can
help should let Martin know. Work will begin at 9 am.
Later in the project, a volunteer or two with carpentry
experience will be needed to relocate the fixtures in the banner closet. Please
let Martin know if you would be interested in helping with this.
Our construction contract with the Spieker Company is now
official. All documents have been signed and copies have been distributed.
With construction set to begin as early as June 6th, we will
have a brief groundbreaking ceremony at end of the Divine Service on June 5th.
Just before the benediction we will gather outside near where the new entrance
will be built to break ground and pray the Lord's blessing on this project.
May 22, 2011
The building committee met this past week to prepare for the
start of construction. Here are highlights from the meeting:
We are approved for a loan from the Church Extension Fund, and
are looking into purchasing necessary insurance for the project.
Ground breaking will be on June 5, and construction will begin
the next day. Before this takes place, cabinets, mail boxes, nursery contents,
and other items will have to be moved or protected. Some of this took place
yesterday, and additional work days are planned tentatively for May 28, and June
4.
The construction contract has been delivered to Spieker Company
for their signature.
A pre-construction "kick-off" meeting with the
architect, contractor, and representatives of the building committee will be
held May 31.
Sewer tap and annexation are proceeding.
The sign committee has a head.
Pictures of the entire project in process will appear on our
website www.sov-lcms.org. Other details will be published in this space weekly.
Follow the changes and progress with us.
May 14, 2011
Joe Strieter and Fred Chatos met with Dave Bowers from the Lutheran
Church Extension Fund last week. Our application for a construction loan will be
approved.
The Building Committee will meet Monday to plan storage of our
materials that need to be out of the way before construction begins. They will
also finalize other details.
The contract for construction will be delivered to the Spieker Company,
Perrysburg, this week for their signature.
Construction is scheduled to begin June 6.
Read the newsletter and check the church website at www.sov-lcms.org to
keep informed of developments on the project.
